SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber says he won’t enforce the new statewide face covering requirement.
In April, Bieber joined other sheriffs in the state in saying he wouldn’t enforce the “Safer at Home” order. Bieber said he wouldn’t enforce rules or laws that infringe on constitutional rights.
Shortly after Gov. Tony Evers announced the statewide mask requirement, FOX 11 sent Bieber a text message asking if he would enforce the new requirement. He replied, “no.” Bieber has not replied on whether he would be willing to do an interview on the requirement.
In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Evers acknowledged some sheriffs likely will not enforce the new rule. However, he encouraged them the rule was in the best health interest of everyone.
The statewide mask mandate takes effect on Saturday. Anyone older than 5 years old is required to wear a mask in buildings, with a number of exceptions.
