RIPON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Ripon City Council voted unanimously Monday to keep a “Black Lives Matter” mural downtown.
The mural was painted on the side of a restaurant by a Ripon College professor.
It drew controversy and sparked a community conversation.
Ripon’s Historic Preservation Commission initially recommended tearing it down because artists didn’t follow the proper permit process, but dozens of letters of support from community members came in asking the commission to let it stay.
“So many different people have written in,” mural painter and co-owner of The Heist Sam Luna told FOX 11….
“The college really showed up. The students really showed and really showed their support. So many different citizens in the area and from outside the area have been just shown so much love.”
Last week, the Historic Preservation Commission approved the permit the artists initially failed to submit.
