GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Brown County Board of Supervisors is expected to tackle the issue of mandatory masking during their meeting next month.
The board’s Human Services Committee advanced three mask-related proposals to the full board last week. Supervisor Pat Evans is against the idea.
“If there was to be a mask mandate, it should have been in April,” Evans told WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl. “We have a 99% survival rate. 42% of all the deaths have been in nursing homes.”
“I don’t subscribe to the idea that people in Brown County are too dumb that the government has to force them to wear a mask, and then punish them for non compliance,” he added.
One of the measures doesn’t actually mandate masks, but simply asks and encourages residents to use them.
“One of the resolutions is going to be to ask the people of Brown County: ‘Hey would you please do this’ and I think you’ll get more compliance with that than you will when you start mandating people’s lives,” Evans said.
Evans says he’s worried about the effects on mental health that the pandemic is having as well.
“What worries me the most about this whole pandemic as we’ve seen the opioid overdoses have now doubled during the pandemic,” he said.
County Supervisor Troy Streckenbach has previously expressed hesitation towards mandatory mask rules, saying they would be difficult to enforce and possibly illegal.
The full board will discuss the mandate at their August 19th meeting.
