GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Red Cross is still in need of blood.
After Blood Donations dropped off as drives were cancelled during the early days of the COVID-19 Pandemic, things are starting up again, and blood is not the only thing they’re looking for.
“We are still in an urgent need for blood products,” Red Cross Spokesperson Laura McGuire told WTAQ on Monday. “Convalescent plasma is the big one, and that is going out the door faster and than it’s coming in. We’re asking all donors who have had the coronavirus to come in and donate plasma.”
Convalescent plasma, which is separated from blood, contains virus-fighting antibodies and is being used to treat people who have COVID-19.
“We’re in the middle of this crisis and there really is no end date,” said McGuire. “The need for blood is going to be constant.”
The Red Cross will be holding a drive this Friday at the Lambeau Field Tailgate Village. Masks will be required and your temperature will be taken beforehand. Donors are asked to sign up online beforehand at RedCrossBlood.org. If you have had COVID-19 and are interested in donating plasma, complete the donor eligibility form at RedCrossBlood.org/plasma4covid.
The Green Bay Packers have partnered with the Red Cross to hold drives at the stadium since 2009. They expect to have their 10,000th donor this Friday. The drive will be held between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.
