GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Mask up or pay up… a mask mandate goes into effect in Green Bay’s public spaces today.
And if you don’t wear a mask, it could cost you. People who aren’t wearing masks inside businesses or city buildings could be fined for trespassing.
“I think it’s the socially responsible thing to do. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” Hillary Golden said.
“It’s not comfortable, but if it’s going to stop the spread and slow it down so that we can return to whatever is normal for us, then I’m all for it.”
Dr. Ashok Rai is the President and CEO of Prevea Health. He tells FOX 11 face coverings are necessary.
“Masks have been proven and they’ve shown clear results. Not perfect, because there is nothing that is perfect, but to help reduce the spread from person to person.”
Not everyone around town is on board.
“We’re free. We’re Americans. We can do anything that we put our minds to. And, now we’re just going to start following China around and having to wear masks everywhere,” Derek Kruczek said.
“I’ve worn a mask, I had to go to Cellcom for an hour, I felt sicker wearing it. I believe in fresh air, I believe in all natural stuff, kind of like this vaccine too, I don’t believe in it.”
Dr. Rai says it will take weeks to see if the mandate reduces the amount of confirmed coronavirus cases here.
More than half of our country’s states have statewide mask mandates, but Gov. Tony Evers has resisted issuing one here because of questions about its legality.
