GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay’s mask mandate is now in effect.
“I wasn’t aware that there was a mandate today,” Kelly Koller of Sobieski said. “We wore them just because we think it’s the right thing to do.”
Others are against the new rule. Fadrian Andrew Smith says the mandate is an overreaction.
“The virus is just a normal cold. It’s interfering with everybody’s life,” Smith said.
“If every customer knows that they have the same rules to follow at every restaurant, it will make the experience a lot easier,” Michael Hastreiter said.
Down the street at Copper State Brewing, general manager Lee Unrath agrees….
“It definitely helps having it be a city wide mandate where there’s not as much confusion on which businesses are including the masks,” Unrath said.
There are some places you don’t need a mask: your house of worship, at the gym working out, while eating, if you have trouble breathing, or are younger than five years old.
Not wearing a mask could result in a $10 fine; but Green Bay’s police chief says enforcing the ordinance isn’t a high priority.
“We have a lot bigger fish to fry in Green Bay. We have a lot more important crimes to deal with than somebody not wearing a mask in a public place,” Smith said. “However, it is a law, we have an ordinance, so it is something that we are going to enforce.”
Green Bay police are hoping for voluntary compliance.
Ultimately, the law is the law, and the new ordinance requires everyone to mask up.
