MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Manitowoc County supervisor Don Zimmer says he’s being treated unfairly after comments he made this week criticizing the ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement at a Manitowoc council meeting.
“The news is being slanted to paint me as a racist,” he said.
At Monday night’s meeting, Zimmer condemned Black Lives Matter as a “criminal organization.”
“Throughout the nation, it has promoted looting, rioting, destruction of property and physical attacks on law enforcement officers,” said Zimmer.
Some people in Manitowoc called the comments bigoted.
“It’s even worse knowing now that he’s doubling down on what he said,” Jennifer Estrada, CEO of Crusaders of Justicia said.
Zimmer says he was criticizing Manitowoc alder Courtney Hansen at the meeting.
They were made on the same night that Aaron Bailey was sworn in as the first black alder in city history, but Zimmer denies he knew Bailey was being sworn in that night. A petition has been circulating calling for Zimmer’s resignation.
