GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Area Public School District is letting families enroll in virtual learning for the first quarter/trimester of the year.
Enrollment is now open for parents who are confident they’d rather have their kids learn from home.
In the meantime, students and parents are waiting to find out what classrooms will look like in the fall.
H.T. Williams tells FOX 11 he hopes his step-son is able to return.
“I think overall they’re all ready. It seems like him and his friends are ready to get back in the classroom.”
Green Bay Area Public School’s Superintendent Stephen Murley says some parents are more hesitant to send their kids back.
“I have also received many inquiries from parents that they are saying they want to ensure that they have the opportunity to have their students stay home.”
The solution for families would be this alternative option.
“We know we have parents and they have legitimate fears and concerns,” said Murley, “they are reluctant to return to the classroom, and we want to make sure we understand the magnitude of these issues.”
Green Bay public schools is still working out the details of off-site enrollment.
The district wants to gauge how many families will enroll before finalizing return to school plans.
GBAPSD Board of Education Trustee Andrew Becker said, “I appreciate us quickly rolling out having, asking that question and knowing how many people are going to prefer an online option which I think we need to widely offer and make sure it is well know.”
Mom of three, Holly Arcand tells FOX 11….
“It’s a great idea for families that don’t want to bring their kids back into the school district but in my opinion my kids want to go back to school.”
“If the goal is to protect our children we should do what’s best in that regard and educate them at home,” said Williams. “If there’s no public health risk then school is the best place to learn outside the home.”
District leaders plan to release a more concrete return to school plan July 31st.
The school board will vote on three learning models, in-person, off-site, and a hybrid model on August 3rd.
Families have until August 7th.
