APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A murder suspect who also allegedly tried to break out of the Outagamie County jail is competent to stand trial, a judge ruled Monday.
Demetrius Williams, who was in custody for allegedly stabbing his pregnant girlfriend and killing her child, is charged with attempted escape and taking a hostage for the June 7 incident. Williams and Matthew Beyer – who is in jail for allegedly killing his two children – did not get out of their cell block, much less the jail building.

Williams’ attorney raised concerns about his client’s competency: Whether Williams understand the court proceedings and can assist in his own defense. After a psychiatric review, Williams was deemed competent to stand trial.
With the competency ruling, the criminal case resumes. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 29 for the escape case. A status conference is set for Aug. 28 on the homicide case.
