FOX CROSSING, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Rachael Cabral-Guevara is campaigning for the 55th State Assembly District’s seat.
“I’m a fiscal conservative and I’m fighting for family values,” Cabral-Guevara says.
In early June, she says she received a scary letter in the mail.
“Referencing hate groups and referencing me being a part of hate groups,” Cabral-Guevara says. “It was in a way threatening, saying that they were watching where I was and where I lived and so forth.”
Two weeks later, she says the word racist was written on a sign that was left in pieces. Then more signs were allegedly stolen.
After another week on the edge, Cabral-Guevara woke up to a surprise last Tuesday. Someone had egged her cars.
She’s filed a police report, but is holding off on reporting the paint damage to her insurance company.
“I don’t want to get my car fixed right now because if this happens again by the end of this election then I have to start all over again,” Cabral-Guevara says.
Cabral-Guevara says the accusations of racism hurt even more because she is the mother of four half-Hispanic children.
“It’s very confusing for my children, it’s very confusing for all of the people that I talk to. It’s very confusing for my community,” Cabral-Guevara says. “If there is anyone that is furthest from being called a racist or somebody that hates, it’s going to be me, not only as a mother, but as a nurse, as a conservative, as an instructor at UW Oshkosh.”
Three republicans are facing off in the district’s primary election, to go up against democrat Dan Schierl in November.
“I was kind of shocked that it was actually happening in our district here. I know it’s been happening throughout the country and some places in the state of Wisconsin, but as soon as I saw it I thought this is unacceptable here and anywhere in the country, so I think we need to call those people out on what happened,” Schierl says.
Cabral-Guevara says so far she hasn’t heard of any leads on a suspect from the police.
Cabral-Guevara says, “In the end all this has done is made me fight harder and stronger for my party and my family and my campaign.”
