GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Area Public School District is asking for input from parents on a set of models for how to handle the upcoming school year amid a pandemic.
Green Bay schools are planning to shift between three models to respond to the ever-changing situation surrounding COVID-19. The district is planning for on-site, off-site and blended models when the school year begins.
“The on-site would be students back at school just like last year, but obviously with the CDC guidelines being implemented,” says Communications Director Lori Blakeslee, “The blended model could be some version of students are at school some part of the week and at home some part of the week. We’re still working through what the details could look like.”
Meanwhile, the fully off-site option will be available for a number of reasons. The district says it is providing a “robust online learning environment” for equitable learning across the board.
“The off-site model is really there for families whose students can’t attend school because they have an underlying health condition, or parents don’t feel comfortable putting their kids in school right now,” Blakeslee tells WTAQ News, “If a student has COVID in a classroom and that classroom needs to be quarantined, we have plans to continue that instruction off-site.”
All decisions will take advice from the medical community into consideration, especially if the virus becomes more prevalent in the area.
“What’s really going to determine what plan is in place is really what the transmission of COVID in the community is…If there’s a lot of significant transmission, we’re going to really be listening to the medical community for what their advice is,” Blakeslee says, “We just have to be prepared and flexible and nimble for whatever the school year brings.”
The district has received feedback from a number of parents and residents about the plans. There are people who are feeling a little uncomfortable about returning. There are people who feel that, with the right safety precautions, feel very comfortable coming back.
To share your thoughts on the options for the fall, use the community input form on the district’s website.
More information is expected to be available by the end of July.
