OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – While there will be no EAA AirVenture this year, you can still explore aviation history.
The EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh will reopen on a limited basis to the public on Monday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.
“The most common question we’ve gotten over the last 3 months, after AirVenture, is when is the museum reopening,” says Communications Director Dick Knapinski, “Still a lot of things to see, to find out about, to discover in the world of flight. We’re just happy on August 3, we can bring people back to EAA.”
The museum has been closed since late March due to COVID-19. Knapinski says they took that time to move some things around.
“People will be able to walk throughout the museum and take a look at the exhibits there the 100 aircraft there including the brand new Huey helicopter that we received back in June,” Knapinski tells WTAQ News, “We put a lot of work into the museum, got some of those projects done that have been sitting for a few years, and moved some airplanes around. So people will see some different formations of airplanes and the newly exhibits as well, so we invite them to come on out.”
A formal dedication of the new Huey helicopter exhibit is planned for later this year.
But the reopening will come with some changes. The museum will limit the number of visitors inside the museum – and temperature checks will be required as people come into the grounds. They are also requiring visitors to wear masks while in the facility and maintain physical distancing.
“Some of the touch screens will be closed down, the KidVenture area will be closed down temporarily during this time, and some of the theaters have been reconfigured to allow some of the physical distancing that we’re looking for while still being able to enjoy some of the video presentations,” Knapinski says, “With our Pioneer Airport, unfortunately we won’t be able to help offer flying experiences this year. But weather permitting, the hangers will be open and those 30 to 40 vintage aircraft will be on display as well.”
There will also be higher levels of cleaning and disinfecting throughout the facility.
