GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay opened the discussion table for a potential mask mandate.
Alder Randy Scannell is pushing for a law to make them mandatory.
“The virus is still there unless we practice good safety measures. Unless the city is telling us to do we’re going to be right where we started from.”.
Jasmone Hart of Green Bay telling FOX 11…
“I don’t see a problem with that at all. I don’t think people are taking the pandemic as seriously as it is I know friends who have caught the virus and family members.”
Others tell FOX they have concerns.
Carl Spargur of Green Bay said, “I don’t necessarily agree with it, there’s a lot of people out there like myself I have asthma and wearing that mask it hurts your health more than it’s helping.”
Scannell’s proposal calls for masks in places where people can’t socially distance.
It doesn’t specify what businesses or situations that includes.
“It all depends on the social interaction,” said Scannell.
During the meeting’s time for public comment, various people shared their thoughts. Either in favor or opposing the potential ordinance.
Such as Jen Beyer, owner of Air Force Gymnastics, who likes the idea of a mandate. Except for her athletes.
“My staff wearing masks I’m thrilled for them to continue in my lobby. Actually having a mandate keeps me from being the mask police, but I just can’t have them on my athletes.”
Brown County Tavern League also spoke against the required mandate
“In a restaurant or bar for a straw with a drink, do you wear a mask? How will you monitor or enforce it,” said President of the Brown County Tavern League Don Mjelde.
Green Bay police commander Kevin Warych told the committee this ordinance would be difficult for his officers to enforce.
The committee failed to refer the ordinance to the council with recommendations.
But, it can remain and be addressed at the next council meeting.
