ONEIDA NATION (WTAQ) — The Oneida Nation is celebrating a Monday decision by the Washington Redskins to drop their name and logo after a prolonged outcry from social justice advocates.
Oneida Nation Chairman Tehassi Hill says he felt ‘joy’ when he first heard that the team were getting rid of a name the tribe has rallied against for years.
“My immediate reaction was great joy,” Hill told WTAQ. “This has been a project of ours for 50 years.”
The Oneida Nation has protested outside of Lambeau Field whenever the Redskins played the Packers. Last year, they released a video focusing on cultural pride when Washington visited the Packers on December 8th.
Hill told WTAQ he thinks the name change is ‘the first domino’ to fall in changing Native American-inspired team names, specifically mentioning the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Cleveland has already announced it’s considering changing it’s team name.
