MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Hospitalizations for the COVID-19 Coronavirus are growing in Wisconsin.
Hospitalizations saw their biggest one-day jump in more than a month as the state’s weekly activity dashboard shows a growing trajectory.
The Wisconsin Hospitals Association says there were 274 patients with positive tests for coronavirus on Wednesday, an increase of 20 since Tuesday. That is the largest one-day jump since May 26, when the count went from 388 to 422.
Wednesday’s number is also the highest since June 16, when 275 people in hospitals had COVID-19. It is an increase of 40 patients since the count reached a four-month low on Saturday.
The number of patients in intensive care has also increased in recent days. On Wednesday, there were 74, up by five in one day and plus nine since a low of 65 on Monday.
The increase in hospitalizations trails by about two weeks a surge in new cases. The state Department of Health Services’ weekly dashboard says Wisconsin’s trend in coronavirus activity is growing. Activity level and case burden are listed as moderate to high in all Northeast Wisconsin counties. Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties are among 11 counties with growing activity. However, Brown County is one of four counties in the state with shrinking activity.
Wednesday’s testing results showed 598 new confirmed cases, the third-highest total in the past two weeks. There were also 10,138 negative tests. The 5.6% positive rate was up from Tuesday’s 3.9%.
The state also reported two new deaths, pushing the total to 807.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 33,154 total cases and 611,150 negative tests. DHS considers 25,305 people to have recovered.
Hospitals say 2,421 of their 11,403 beds were available as of Wednesday. There were 1,253 ventilators in the state, with 307 in use.
