GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — It’s expected to get hot this Fourth of July weekend, with temperatures sticking in the 90s.
With high temperatures comes a serious health risk. Heat cramps or worse, heat stroke can occur if you’re not careful.
Dr. Brad Burmeister is a Bellin Health Emergency Doctor and he starts seeing patients with heat illness in early June.
“Heat stroke actually has a fairly high mortality rate,” said Burmeister. “Some sources say it can have a 30%, or even up to 80% chance or mortality if not treated immediately.”
Heat stroke symptoms include high body temperature, nausea, flushed skin, rapid breathing, an elevated heart rate, and a headache.
Burmeister said there’s a lot you can do to stave off the impacts of high heat.
“Try to stay hydrated. Try to push fluids. If you find yourself sweating a lot, try for electrolyte replacements, like Gatorade,” Burmeister told WTAQ.
He adds to know your limits if you plan to be outdoors.
Temperatures are expected to stay in the 90s throughout Independence day weekend.
