UW-Extension sent out some “guidance” for any 4-H events that are happening at county fairs this year.
In the announcement it says nothing that happens in a large gathering will be 4-H related because they say that most of the activities happening during the fair won’t meet extension requirements. Even though, every fair that’s still happening this year is taking every precaution possible to make sure that the events go on safely for the public while following health guidelines.
Senator Duey Strobel of Saukville had some things to say about the announcement from UW-Extension. “UW-Extension has decided to pretend that this Summer doesn’t exist.” Stroebel goes on to say, “What lessons about hard work, overcoming adversity and community service are we teaching these kids when the order from UW-Extension is to hide indoors…the better question is why should their parents pay taxes to support an organization that actively discourages its stated mission and goals?”
Is he wrong? I don’t think so. Seems to me that UW-Extension is taking the title “4-H” away from all events that normally are associated with the organization because they’re scared of what could happen if the event goes on and someone gets sick. For example, 4-H Clubs can’t have the word 4-H in their title at the fair. Interesting that when something happens in the world, they decide to back down from the values 4-H was built on.
