JACKSONPORT, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Maybe it’s Door County’s 53 beaches…
…or several local farm markets…
…or outdoor activities…
Tourists are expected to head to Door County in big numbers for the 4th of July weekend.
“We usually stay at resort in Wisconsin every summer and because it’s a busy place we decided to cancel,” said Danny Smith. He and his family will stick to things like kayaking and beach time.
“We’re not going out to any restaurants or activities here, we’re just going to stay around the house and the beach,” he said.
Last year Door County tourism bought in about $374 million. The county’s visitor’s bureau says even amid a global pandemic, those numbers shouldn’t be impacted.
“Rooms are really tight this weekend, there’s not a lot of availability on doorcounty.com,” said Jon Jarosh, President of Destination Door County.
He expects tourism at local hotels and businesses to remain high.
Jarosh tells FOX 11 believes it will stay that way because of the county’s outdoor recreation, even though big-ticket events like lakeside fireworks and the county’s parade are canceled.
“With the health crisis going on it’s kind of like ‘oh yeah, a lot of this stuff that door county has to offer kind of provides for that natural social distancing.’
Jarosh won’t have numbers reflecting tourism over the fourth of July weekend for months.
But last-minute visits from families like the smiths
“Peace and quiet and some beach time,” said Smith with a smile.
Could make up for what the county lost.
