GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Two ‘Grim Reapers’ holding scythes led a protest across from JBS Packerland in Green Bay on Thursday, demanding the company shut down the slaughterhouse.
The Grim Reapers were accompanied by a handful of others as they held signs saying “Slaughterhouses Kill Animals and Workers”.
“JBS not only endangers the lives animals, but also its workers. Over 300 employees tested positive for COVID-19,” says PETA volunteer Arianna Beals, “We ask that JBS not re-open its slaughterhouse in order to save the lives of animals, the environment, and the workers – and to prevent the next global pandemic.”
PETA argues that close-quarters conditions within the facility spread COVID-19 like wildfire, calling slaughterhouses ‘breeding grounds’ for deadly diseases that can jump from animals to humans. But they’re not asking the company to shut down completely.
“JBS is already developing vegan products that they already put on the market. We ask that JBS continue making vegan products,” Beals tells WTAQ News, “There is no such thing as humane meat…Going vegan, you prevent from slaughtering any animals.”
PETA reportedly sent JBS a letter offering to help re-train employees to produce exclusively vegan products. There is no word on any response from the company.
