It seems everyone, including the Green Bay Packers, had wide receiver on their shopping list heading into the 2020 NFL Draft. A record 13 were snapped up in the first two rounds and 17 were taken among the first 92 picks. Denver bought one and got one free in Jerry Jeudy in round one and KJ Hamler in round 2.
The Packers had the position high on their wish list but seems they were in the wrong position on the draft board across all 3 rounds.
Thursday night, San Francisco traded up to the number 25 spot to take Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk, the 6th receiver taken in round one. The Packers went with Jordan Love, the quarterback on the next pick.
In Round two Friday night, another half dozen receivers fell including speedy Denzel Mims to the Jets only three spots before Green Bay's pick at number 94. The Packers turned to the running back position with Boston College bruiser A.J. Dillon.
Finally in the third round, maybe the last possible helper to the Packer offense, slot receiver Devin Duvernay of Texas, was taken off the board by the Baltimore Ravens at pick 92, only two slots in front of Green Bay.
So the Packers then moved to the tight end position, taking Josiah Deguara from the University of Cincinnati at pick 94. Deguara is a 6-2, 242 redshirt senior who grew from a 190 pound receiver in high school into a first team All American Athletic Conference tight end. Considered a late round prospect, the Packers said his versatility as a tight end and H-back working out of the backfield increased his stock.
Deguara started the last two seasons for the Bearcats and finished strong with 39 receptions for 468 yards and five scores as a junior in 2018 and catching 39 passes for 504 yards and seven touchdowns last fall.
Deguara will join a tight end group that will be minus Jimmy Graham who was released after two seasons but still mentored by another veteran in Mercedes Lewis along with young players Robert Tonyan, Evan Baylis and last year's third round pick in Jace Sternberger.
It's the first time since 2011 the Packers have selected offensive players in each of the first three rounds. That year, Green Bay took tackle Derek Sherrod, receiver Randall Cobb and running back Alex Green.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst will have six draft picks at his disposal on the final day Saturday beginning in the 5th round. His 4th round choice was given up in the trade with Miami to climb four spots to take Love in round one.
