MENOMINEE, MI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A former Menominee County, Michigan sheriff’s deputy accused of sexually assaulting a teenager has submitted a written not guilty plea.
Brian Helfert, 56, faces two counts of criminal sexual misconduct-third degree, for allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old boy.
FOX 11 is reporting the written plea, submitted Monday, eliminates the need for the arraignment hearing Wednesday, according to the district court office.
Helfert returns to court on February 6th for a probable cause hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, Helfert was a school resource officer at Menominee High School. Helfert acted as “mentor” to the teen, the boy told police.
On November 10th, the victim, referred to as “John Doe,” asked Helfert for a ride home. Once there, Helfert allegedly touched the boy inappropriately.
“Doe further reported Helfert told Doe that ‘he cannot tell anyone, including his parents,’ “ the complaint states.
Helfert faces up to 15 years in prison on each count if convicted.
Helfert was fired from the department in December for violating sheriff’s office policies, procedures, and rules of conduct.
