GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Brown County Clerk says she opposes a bill that would legalize taking a selfie with your election ballot.
Senate Bill 48 was passed by the Senate on Tuesday. It would allow voters to take photos of their ballot–an act that’s currently a felony offense in Wisconsin.
“Right now, everyone has the right to secrecy with their vote,” Brown County Clerk Sandy Juno told WTAQ. “Now, especially with social media nowadays, they would be losing that secrecy.”
Juno says sharing pictures of your ballot could have personal consequences, and that’s why it should stay a felony.
“My biggest fear would be that somebody would use it against [the voter],” “Either in a working environment or some other type of position.
She’s also worried people could use ballot pictures to spread misinformation.
“There’s always a chance someone could vote incorrectly and put it out there that that’s the correct way to vote and mislead people” Juno said. “So there’s always that misinformation that could be out there as a result.
The bill has bipartisan support. It now moves to the State Assembly. The Wisconsin County Clerk Association has registered against the bill.
