BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – A former used car dealer in Suamico and Kaukauna is now facing 15 federal charges of conspiracy to commit mail, wire and bank fraud.
In documented complaints, 37-year old John Solberg of Green Bay allegedly sold used vehicles at his Standard PreOwned dealerships but never paid the owners.
According to the indictment, Solberg and others working under his direction would seek out individuals selling their vehicles on Craigslist and convince them to turn over their vehicles to be sold on consignment. The indictment says Solberg then sold the vehicles without approval and without notifying the owners of the sale. Solberg is also accused of creating counterfeit vehicle titles, allowing the purchaser of the vehicle to believe they “owned the vehicle free and clear of any liens.”
The conspiracy count carries a maximum of 30 years in prison and up to a $1 million fine. The remaining counts each carry a maximum of 20 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
