Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Officials expect this year’s numbers to look similar to last year’s gun deer season. This year officials are stressing safety, and not just with the firearm.
“We’ve got really unique conditions out on the land,” said Green Bay District Wildlife Supervisor Jeff Pritzl. “High water means that some areas that were wadeable in the past may not be this year and ice conditions may potentially be sketchy.”
Pritzl says hunters should take the time to scout their land ahead of time for hazards.
Half a million people are expected to participate in this year’s gun deer season, which begins this weekend.
This year hunters will have more shots at taking home doe.
“In many of the farmland counties that are trying to increase their antlerless deer harvest you’re authorized to have up to three, four, five, in one case even six antlerless authorizations,” Pritzl told WTAQ.
This is the first year in some time where doe permits are being issued in every county in Wisconsin.
Pritzl adds that conditions are looking “pretty good” with temperatures expected to be from “cool” to “cold”.
