OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – A soccer field in Winnebago County has been damaged after police say someone drove over it with a vehicle Wednesday night.
The field at Community Park in Oshkosh will need to be repaired, and Rob Way, County Parks Director says one questionable decision will have a big impact on many people.
“It has impacted the field enough that it will not be playable for sure anymore this year. We are not going to be able to attend to the damage until next year and that could affect some of the programming.”
He says the community soccer clubs will be impacted most.
“Those organizations are going to have the hardships of rescheduling and doing a lot of shifting,” Way said. “They will have to move off that field and with the degree of how much need we have for fields, they are actually played on quite a bit. It is going to be a hardship for the soccer clubs to move.”
The County Parks Department will also see an unexpected extra workload come spring.”We are in high demand just getting things up and running and now to set aside resources to prepare a field is going to be a hardship for us as well.”Way says with winter approaching, and current standing water issues, it is likely that the repairs will have to be pushed back to spring when the fields are used the most.
Similar acts of vandalism have taken place recently in Lawrence at Quarry Park and in Appleton at Fox Valley Lutheran High School. As far as prevention for the future, that is also being worked on.
“We are already making more efforts towards getting additional cameras.”
Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Oshkosh Police.
