TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – More rain, wind, and waves slammed the Lake Michigan shoreline near Two Rivers Monday morning.
City Engineer and Public Works Director Jim McDonald says “Oh, this is a bad day. This will wreak some havoc on the shore throughout the city.”
The city has already seen flooding this year, and there is potential for more. As of Monday afternoon, storm sewers throughout the city were flushed with runoff through the system. But every time there is flooding, McDonald takes notice.
“All it takes is one storm to emphasize the fact that it’s too high for comfort levels.”
McDonald adds that the issue is more than erosion, as surging water is causing backups onshore.
“Sand will pile up at our storm water outfalls. So we’re going to be out there twice a day, cleaning those out,” says McDonald.
He also says the city is losing ground to the lake every time there is a storm.
“Last Friday night actually, we had to place some rip-rap here in order to preserve a sidewalk or trail system that we had just poured. And the shoreline was 20-25 feet out farther.”
For now, McDonald says he will be watching the streets, the skies and the surf for any changes.
