MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) – A bat is causing health concerns in Menasha.
A person needed to get a rabies shot and two dogs have been quarantined after they came in contact with a bat that was confirmed to have had rabies.
The Menasha Health Department announced the bat’s positive rabies test on Friday.
The Menasha Health Dept. tests as many as 20 animals a year for rabies. Most of those are bats.
It has been at least six years since an animal in the city tested positive for rabies.
Health department officials issued these tips to protect against rabies:
- Vaccinate pets, make sure all are up to date
- Contact a veterinarian as soon as possible if your pet is exposed
- Don’t keep exotic or wild animals as pets
- Don’t let bats enter your home
- Seal cracks and gaps near a roof
- Apply soap and water if exposed, go to the doctor immediately
Animals also susceptible to rabies are bats, skunks, a cow, cat, dog and fox.
