MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WTAQ) – A group of St. Norbert College students hoping to make a big impact completed their 140-mile walk to Milwaukee on Saturday.
Their $20,000 goal was supposed to represent the 20 veterans that die by suicide each day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Kellen Witty says they also carried 50 pounds of gear on their trip.
“We had a lot of low points when we were on country roads all by ourselves, no cars driving by. We just had to focus and we really had to carry each other but that’s why we do it. One-hundred-and-forty miles is nothing if it means that one other veteran knows there is someone out there and there is help that can be given.”
That money gets donated to 4th HOOA, or Helping Out Our American Heroes. The money is used to fund the organization’s programs but takes up individual projects too.
