GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A construction project focusing on affordable housing broke ground in downtown Green Bay Tuesday.
Broadway Lofts held a ceremonial groundbreaking at 420 N. Broadway, at the north end of the 22-acre Rail Yard District.
The project will include 93 affordable apartments, made up of one, two and three-bedroom units and 14, three-bedroom townhouses.
Green Bay mayor Eric Genrich tells FOX 11 having affordable housing will attract those who want to work downtown, allowing those businesses to thrive.
“I think there’s tremendous demand to live down here and we just have to make sure that we’re offering high-quality housing to all income groups, so this meets a significant need.”
According to Green Bay alderman, Brian Johnson, this project helps the Broadway District meet its goals of adding 200 residential units and attracting 50 new businesses within the next five years.
In May, the Rail Yard expanded Donald Driver Way, Kellogg St. and Bond St. to allow for more development in the district.
Last year, eight high-end condos began construction in the Rail Yard.
Broadway Lofts are expected to be finished in Dec. of 2020.
