MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Fourth of July celebrations took place coast to coast, and along the Lakeshore, thousands gathered in downtown Manitowoc Thursday morning.
The city held it’s very first Fourth of July parade.
The idea came from the mayor himself.
Justin Nickels tells FOX 11 it’s been a long time since people marched in the streets in July.
“1976. For the 200th anniversary of the country. They had a parade. But this one, we want to make it an annual event.”
“It’s the first Fourth of July Parade here. So kind of a big deal. And the weather is cooperating, and we’re all excited. Hopefully, we have a good crowd downtown,” said Mike Herzfeldt, Manitowoc DAV.
With a snip of the over-sized scissors, the inaugural event was underway. Nickels calls it a point of personal pride.
“Fourth of July is my favorite holiday personally. Ever since I was a young kid. It’s what got me into politics and wanting to be president someday. So, just having the parade was just another cool thing we could add.”
From the military flag detail to the line of fire trucks, there were 42 entries in all.
Paul Kohlman is at the parade with his family.
“Don’t have to work. Day off. and it’s just a good time to celebrate our freedom.”
“I think the Fourth of July Parade is awesome. It’s great. The first time in Manitowoc in how long? It’s awesome,” said Erik Kohlman, Manitowoc.
As the parade pressed on, people had a chance to reflect on the day.
“It’s just wonderful. Look, the sun is shining. No rain. It’s a beautiful day, and we think about our founding fathers, and what happened. And I’m just thankful,” said Kathy Strickland, Manitowoc.
“Freedom. America. It’s one of the best places in the whole world to live. I’ve been to a lot of countries, no country tops this one,” said Michael Bixler, Manitowoc.
The parade was only part of the celebration in Manitowoc.
The “Fourth on the Shore” event also featured, music, food, and the fireworks show last night.
