SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – The waiting game continues on a Federal Government Organization’s decision to allow the increase of Shawano Lake levels.
The decision will come from the Federal Environmental Regulation Commission of FREC.
Gary DeFere, President of the Shawano Area Waterways Management is hoping for the same outcome as last year.
“The lake would go back to what we consider to be normal levels which is about five inches higher than it is now.”
Last years permission was good through September.
After the waters opened this year, DeFere says they had to get permission to raise it to normal again, and even though they got their way last year, each year the issue is considered all over again.
He says the issue to him comes down to safety.
“People are afraid to come out with their boats because people are wiping out their lower units and causing accidents where people are thrown from the boat. It is dangerous, it is just pure dangerous.”
A decision is expected sometime this week.
