APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – AAA has selected Huntley Elementary School’s Isaiah Solberg as Wisconsin School Safety Patroller of the Year.
The tradition has been going on since 1920, and Isaiah is the newest member of the AAA School Safety Patrol.
The award was given at the all-school awards ceremony at Huntly Elementary School in Appleton Friday.
Isaiah was selected from numerous candidates from across the state based on leadership qualities, safety knowledge, and school and community involvement.
He says safety is important to him because it can decide life or death.
Isaiah has served as Captain of Huntley Elementary’s Safety Patrol for two years and in his time, he helps train and supervises new members.
That roll also includes helping people cross the street while holding a flag to alert cars in the area. He started doing that in October of 2017.
Isaiah was holding his lunch tray when he found out that he was the winner of the Wisconsin Safety Patroller of the Year award.
“I was so excited that I almost dropped my lunch.”
Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for AAA was in Appleton to present Isaiah with the plaque.
“We receive probably a dozen or so nominations, but every year we always have one that stands out and this year it was Isaiah.”
Jarmusz says Isaiah was selected because he was reliable, did good work and because of all his additional volunteer work in the school and community.
Isaiah was also given a legislative citation by State Representative David Murphy.
As part of the process, Isaiah will also get a trip to Washington D.C. in March as part of a special tour group.
Isaiah also is involved by playing multiple sports and is a member of the Ukulele Club while also participating in park clean-ups on Earth Day, ringing bells for Salvation Army and assisting with Boy Scout food drives.
