APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Just under a month after a shooting incident that claimed the life of Appleton Fire Driver Engineer Mitch Lundgaard, the investigation into the details of the event are still in the hands of the Green Bay Police Department.
Officer Meghan Cash of Appleton PD says right now all investigations are in the waiting stage put hopes to have answers soon to give the family closure.
“The labs are kind of what they are waiting on at this point. Nothing is going to replace Mitch, but if we can help the Lundgaard family function a little better we want to provide that.”
The female bystander who was shot during the violent incident is back home. ThedaCare officials and Officer Cash confirmed that Brittany Schowalter has been released from ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah.
She says the Appleton officer who was shot is still recovering from his injuries and is still on administrative leave along with the officer involved in the shooting of Ruben Houston.
She says once the investigation is complete, the department will be able to look at the circumstances to see if there is anything they can do to help prevent situations like the May 15 shooting.
Crews responded to a medical call May 15 at the transit center to help Ruben Houston. He got into a shootout with police officers. Houston was killed, as was firefighter Mitchell Lundgaard. Police Officer Paul Christensen was treated and released. Brittany Schowalter, who police described as an innocent bystander, was also injured
There is no set timeline for when the investigation will be completed.
