GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Police have identified the man that died in their custody last month.
They say 46-year-old Javier Francisco Garcia-Mendez died on April 26.
According to officers, several people called 911 that night to report a man pounding on doors, chasing people, and causing a disturbance at 1424 Admiral Court, which is the location of Green Bay Housing Authority-owned Mason Manor apartment building.
Police later found Garcia-Mendez in the 1400 block of Shirley Street, which is just across Mason Street.
Officers used a taser and handcuffed him, and at that point, he grew increasingly distressed.
On-hand officers began trying to save his life and paramedics arrived on scene and continued trying to save Garcia-Mendez’s life.
Following the incident, Garcia-Mendez was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Garcia-Mendez was arrested in connection with a disturbance earlier that week at a different residence in Green Bay, according to police.
Formal charges of battery/domestic abuse, disorderly conduct/domestic abuse and resisting or obstructing an officer were filed in the case, but were dismissed after Garcia-Mendez died, according to online court records.
Investigation has been turned over to Appleton P.D. and no results have been released yet.
