GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Green Bay Police Department is joining departments around the nation in recognizing a special group of officers this week.
Officers in Green Bay are being thanked and recognized for the services that they provide the community, but a special group of officers is being remembered in all communities, including Green Bay.
“We have lost 23,720 police officers in the line of duty since the beginning of the United States.”
Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith says on this week every year, they remember one of their own.
“We have only lost one officer in the line of duty and that was in 1951 when an officer was killed by a drunk driver.”
The Police Department is honoring the officer during their ceremony on Wednesday.
Smith says they take time to do this every year, but this year, four officers from their color guard that are retiring get a special opportunity at the Nations Capitol.
“We sent four officers who were retiring and maybe it was a bucket list thing for them, but I think it is good for us to go out there and represent the city of Green Bay.”
Smith says they don’t offer that opportunity every year and he has been out there on a couple of occasions.
