DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A two mile walk to raise money to end Type 1 diabetes was held in De Pere Saturday.
The JDRF One Walk started and ended at the Brown County Fairgrounds.
The money raised from the walks goes toward research to help treat, cure and prevent Type 1 diabetes.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. The clinic goes on to say insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.
“I’m always really amazed at just the generosity in peoples hearts to provide comfort, to fundraise… to really show their support because, you know, the daily struggles is real,” said Julie Feest, JDRF One Walk executive director.
As of Saturday afternoon, the event raised $103,021 of its $157,725 goal.
The walk started in the Green Bay area in 2001.
Neenah will host its walk Saturday, May 18 at Riverside Park.
