ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Ashwaubenon and Pulaski High School students are getting ready for the performance of a lifetime.
Both bands will perform at New York City’s Saint Patrick’s day parade.
One student at Ashwaubenon High School says she’s excited to perform in front of millions. Mieka Clark conducts and leads band performances at the high school.
The senior tells FOX 11 she’s ready to go out with a bang.
“All of that commitment, all of that time, all of that effort, it’s all to the one point and there’s just so much pride there for everybody, and I’m just so excited.”
Outside of required practice, Clark says plenty of band members are working overtime to perfect their routine.
“There are certain practices like on Sunday, where we go and we march laps for three hours straight and just go and go and go.”
If you step into the band room, you’ll find students stepping to the beat, regardless if there’s an instructor.
But Ashwaubenon High School isn’t the only one packed and ready to go.
Pulaski High School choir student Col O’Brien says he and his classmates have been putting in a lot of overtime, both in and out of the classroom.
A junior at Pulaski High School, O’Brien is headed to the Big Apple on Wednesday. They’ll perform at Carnegie Hall.
While singing at the world famous hall is something he’s proud of, Col says it’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
But he tells FOX 11 all that time is worth it.
“To be able to say that you did something like that is kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity where like. I know I did the right thing putting in all my time and effort into this program to see something so great come out of it.”
“Something like this is incredibly important for students to work together as a group,” said Marc Jimos, Ashwaubenon High School band instructor.
He says working as a group, for an experience they’ll never forget.
“They might not remember every song ten years from now that they played in band class, but they’ll remember they went to the St. Patrick’s Day parade and performed and they’ll remember the people that they did those things with.”
The bands will march Saturday from 10 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m.
Pulaski choir members will also perform at Carnegie Hall Sunday night.
