APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A recent fatal snowmobile crash in Outagamie County has Sheriff officials reminding snowmobile operators to follow the law.
Officials say the crash Thursday morning that occurred when a snowmobile ran into the back of a semi-truck was a result of the snowmobile operator not following marked signs on the trail.
Sergeant Nathan Borman says there are other safety tips that riders should keep in mind.
“Wearing helmets, observing speed limits and not drinking while driving.”
Sergeant Borman says paying attention to the markings and signs on the trail could be life-saving.
“Snowmobile clubs put a lot of effort into making sure the trails are well groomed and well marked.”
Borman adds crossing a highway safely is the responsibility of the snowmobile operator.
“As long as the snowmobiles are obeying the stop signs and checking for traffic, your general automobile driver should not be impacted by snowmobiles in the area.
He says stop sign violations are common.
“Our snow patrol has experienced quite a few stop sign violations and they will be out enforcing those laws and issuing citations for drivers that do not obey the signs.”
Borman says staying on the snowmobile trail is always safer than trying to cross highways.
