OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ/WNFL) – Fox Valley Pro Basketball unveiled the name and logo for the new Oshkosh women’s professional basketball team, the Wisconsin GLO, today at the Menominee Nation Arena. The new franchise is owned by Fox Valley Pro Basketball and will call the Oshkosh arena it’s home.
The team will be part of the Global Women’s Basketball Association (GWBA). Currently, the GWBA consists of the Topeka Shock, the Wisconsin GLO, the Music City Icons, the Flint Monarchs, and the St. Louis Surge. The Monarchs are the reigning league champions. The GWBA targets future expansion of up to 12 teams for the 2020 season and status as the primary feeder for the WNBA.
“We are extremely excited to embark on this inaugural season of Professional Women’s Basketball in the Fox Valley and Wisconsin,” said Greg Pierce, Fox Valley Pro Basketball President.
He adds “It is our intention to build the best women’s basketball team that has ever been assembled in Wisconsin. Despite the relative infancy of the team and our league, we will aggressively pursue the goal of being the best women’s basketball team in the country shy of the WNBA. Our hope is to provide an inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere where our players can serve as strong, confident, disciplined role models for young girls who are often unable to see their athletic heroes up close. Our franchise can serve as an important piece in the advancement of women’s sports. We are committed to creating a first-class experience for our players while supporting the development of women’s basketball and women’s athletics as a whole.”
Pierce says the general manager, coach, and staff will be announced on March 11th. All of which are in place, but finishing their current commitments at this point. Most of the 12 woman roster has ties to the area. “We will probably, in my opinion, be putting together one of the finest women’s basketball teams that’s ever been assembled in the state,” said Pierce. “There’s just such quality Division I talent from UW-Green Bay, from Marquette as they are now a top ten team this year, and frankly our hometown University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh with its team who currently is in the tournament for Division III.”
The Wisconsin GLO will play eight games at Menominee Nation Arena starting in early May. The 2019 GWBA campaign runs May through July with four home exhibition games, four regular season home games, and four road games. Playoffs are targeted for August. Season tickets will go on sale Friday, March 1st and start at $60. Glow sticks are promised for everyone at every game.
