APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A single sprinkler saved an Appleton daycare from possibly going up in flames.
Fire crews were called to Appleton KinderCare on S. Oneida Street just before noon Monday for a kitchen fire.
Firefighters say as a person was putting away food items in the kitchen, they were discarding empty boxes on the stove top.
Somehow during this process, the burner on the stove top was accidentally put in the “on” position, starting a fire.
That activated a sprinkler head above and the fire was extinguished.
Thanks to the sprinkler, the damage was limited to some cardboard boxes on top of the stove.
All staff and 65 children inside evacuated safely.
Appleton Fire says this is the second incident in the past two months where a sprinkler prevented a building fire from growing.
