WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – At least one person is dead following a pileup of 131 vehicles along Interstate 41 in Winnebago County. Sheriff’s officials report that incident occurred just after 11 AM Sunday during whiteout conditions across the county.
66 people reported injuries from that incident, some were treated and released. 5 remain hospitalized. Busses were brought in to take those who were not injured but couldn’t remove their vehicles from the pileup to nearby businesses and churches to be reunited with their families.
Another pileup was reported in the afternoon in Shawano County along Highway 29. As many as 10 vehicles were involved in that incident, no word on any injuries.
Additionally, the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office posted an update to Facebook saying they had two squad cars that were hit during the snowy conditions, using it as another reminder for drivers to slow down or stay home.
Sunday’s snowfall totals only added to records across the state. In many areas, February has become the snowiest month on record.
