GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay police say a large number of hazardous chemicals has been found inside a Green Bay home in the 1200 block of Redwood Drive.
The incident began with a disturbance call involving a male and female.
Captain Jeremy Muraski of the Green Bay Police Department said an officer followed a vehicle that left the residence and a female, that was not dressed for the colder weather, exited the vehicle and a male encountered law enforcement.
“The female ran into the home and officers went to follow and to check on her welfare and make sure everything was okay with her, and when they did that, they discovered a large volume of hazerdous type chemicals in the basement of the residence.”
He said the materials were things that the normally would not see in a residence and were located in various containers.
“They described it as basically being a small laboratory, a small basement laboratory,” says Captain Muraski
The chemicals were described as “volatile in nature.”
“For that reason, we did contact the fire department and that is why the hazardous team is out here today,” he says.
The Police Department’s common practice of evacuating the neighboorhood is taking place during the investigation.
“The chemicals will be removed in a safe way,” Captain Muraski says.
The original disturbance will remain under investigation.
Police say they are asking residents to stay clear of the area and let the hazardous materials team do their work.
The specific type of chemicals found inside the home has yet to be released by police and as of 4:30 PM a portion of Redwood Drive was still blocked off.
The chemicals cannot be removed from the home until they are tested.
“They do want to specifically identify what it is they are looking at if it’s a combination of things, but to get the specific definitions of what it is,” says Captain Muraski.
