SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) – A series of big cat sightings in northern Brown County had authorities investigating.
DNR Spokesperson Jeff Pritzl says they have confirmed that the cat is not a mountain lion.
“We have pretty much definitively concluded that the photo is a bobcat.”
The photo was captured on a trail camera and the photo was submitted to the DNR by the Suamico Police.
He says there were two areas that they used to confirm the cat’s identity.
“The tail does show pretty strong evidence that it is short and has a black tip to the end of it. The ears look much like a bobcat color.”
Pritzl says bobcats are not uncommon in Wisconsin, but they are not normally seen.
“They are very secretive in nature, so they are very rarely witnessed.”
Pritzl added that if it was determined that the cat was a cougar, the response would not have been that much different.
“There is no action to take short of a lion doing something that would cause damage to livestock or threaten human safety.”
Pritzl says they use the information to keep records of sightings.
