MIDDLETON, WI (WSAU) — Middleton Police say the suspect in an active shooter was killed after a shootout with four police officers at the WTS Paradigm office where he worked.
The shooter entered the building on Deming Way in Middleton just after 10:20 AM on Wednesday and opened fire, hospitalizing two people. The Wisconsin State Journal reports one is reportedly listed in critical condition; two are listed in serious condition. A fourth person was grazed by a bullet and not seriously injured.
Police officials in Middleton remain tight-lipped about what unfolded inside the building, saying they are still interviewing witnesses.
“Their actions, their quick actions, things that we’ve trained for, the training worked, and it did put a stop to this incident.”
The gunman’s name and age have not been released, but Police did confirm he was a Madison resident and had been employed at the software company.
“We have a reason to believe that the suspect was heavily armed, with a lot of extra ammunition, a lot of extra magazines.”
According to the Journal, the shootout between officers and the gunman happened just minutes after the shooting began. He was confronted by two Middleton Police Officers and two Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies. The man did fire at the officers, but none of them were injured. He was pronounced dead at the UW Hospital.
In a news conference on Wednesday Middleton Chief Charles Foulke praised the work of the four officers, saying their quick action likely saved lives.
The incident caused several nearby businesses and schools to be locked down. At least 40 squad cars and ambulances from multiple agencies reported to the scene.
