GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- The cold weather in April will likely delay the start of a highly anticipated event.
This time of year, many are excited to see the Sturgeon participate in their annual spawn, but DNR Biologist Ryan Koenigs says the wait is going to be longer this year.
“We have close to 20 degrees of water warming that has to take place before the sturgeon are going to be active, so it is going to be awhile.
Koenigs says the water has to be in the 50’s and right now it is about 30 to 35 degrees.
The annual event usually gets underway mid-April, but Koenigs says that will not happen this year, and for now, the watch is on hold.
“The normal spawning is normally around April 15 to May 1, but this year, I don’t see it being until late April and into May.”
Shiocton, New London, and Shawano are popular places to view the Sturgeon once they arrive.
