GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ)- A YMCA sponsored Youth Camp near Suring is doing all they can to help send kids to camp.
With hopes of leveling the playing field, Camp Unahliya Executive Director Max Clark says the goal is to make sure that at-risk youth get the experience and benefits that camp brings.
“We raise funds to help that family out and we stretch those dollars out as much as we can.”
Without that fundraising, Clark says these kids would not be able to afford to go.
He says the camp is not just about time away from home, but what the troubled youth learn while they are there.
“We really want to get into their lives, and speak some positive values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and hopefully have some life-changing events with them.
The Greater Green Bay YMCA camp applies for grants each year and then fundraiser to match that amount.
“That is enough to send 60 at-risk kids from Green Bay to camp, and even outfit them with all the gear they need to.”
Clark says that includes backpacks, sleeping bags, and transportation.
“It is really good for them to go to camp. It is good for them to be away from their parents to form independence and that positive character.”
.A large fundraising dinner is taking place April 12th at Hinterland.
