OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – A local doctor is encouraging folks to stay active during the winter months.
ThedaCare Family Physician Eric Smiltneek says there are number of cold-weather sports and activities for families to enjoy.
“Cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and ice-skating. We have a lot of areas where there are frozen ponds or skating venues.”
Smiltneek notes there are also physical activities at home, such as video games that require movement and even kitchen dance parties.
“Start up the music, find something that the kids may like, set that up, sometimes set up a theme.”
He says adults should spend 30 minutes a day doing activity that gets the heart rate up, with that doubling for kids.
“Some of the numbers that are most affected by exercise levels tend to look worse in February and March than they did in August and September.”
Smiltneek also suggests checking local recreational facilities and gyms for indoor sports days/leagues.
