CHILTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Many people recognize October as breast cancer awareness month but this month is also dedicated to raising awareness of domestic violence.
Monday night, Harbor House held a candlelight vigil in Chilton to draw attention to the issue.
Harbor House offers safety and support to abuse victims and families in Outagamie and Calumet counties.
Organizers tell FOX 11 one in four women will be affected by domestic violence and that men will play a critical role in ending this epidemic.
“It’s a pretty big issue,” said Harbor House Calumet Co. outreach coordinator, Melissa Giebel.
“A lot of times it goes unreported, but we prosecute about 125 cases per year but we know that there’s more than that in the community.”
“We know men are the vast majority of the perpetrators and because of that, we need men also stepping up and speaking up and helping in these epidemics, ” said Shannon Kenevan of Voices of Men.
Harbor House says it serves more than 1,600 children and adults each year.
