GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A local hotel official discusses Sunday night’s mass shooting near Mandalay Bay and Casino in Las Vegas.
Ron Zellars manages the Hampton Inn Green Bay. He stresses the importance of hiring vigilant employees and providing them with proper training on signs of suspicious behavior.
“We do our best to make sure that we’re looking for things that are out of the normal, things that don’t look right, but it’s very chilling when you see something like that happen.”
Zellars stresses the importance of workers knowing how a typical person or group would act.
“If something seems out of the norm, you’d certainly bring it up, but it can be difficult to determine exactly what’s coming or going.”
Zellars notes that even having a good staff can’t fully prevent against everything since hotels attract a wide-range of guests.
“They don’t have different clothing choices, luggage choices, interests. You’re basically at the mercy of someone showing something that they have the intent to do something horrible.”
According to Zellars, guarding against a tragedy takes a team effort.
“Whether it be a front desk person that sees something suspicious, a housekeeper that’s cleaning their room that something doesn’t seem right, or somebody’s trying to sneak something inside.”
Authorities say 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire at fans at an outdoor country concert, taking his own life after killing at least 58 people and injuring at least 500 others.
