MADISON, WI (WRN) – A reminder to practice good cyber hygiene, as the state begins Cyber Security Awareness month.
The recent data breach at Equifax has many people rethinking the best ways to keep their personal information safe in a world that’s constantly more connected to the internet.
Tod Pritchard with Wisconsin Emergency Management says it’s important for people to keep tabs on what threats are out there.
“So many of the people who become victims were just not aware of the potential problems coming their way. The just didn’t see the scam coming.”
Pritchard says simple steps, like keeping your systems up to date and changing passwords often, can go a long way towards protecting yourself.
While remembering passwords to multiple accounts can be difficult, it really is best not to use the same one in several places.
Also, be aware of what’s connected to your home network and change the default passwords on those devices.
